Mt. Ruapehu, New Zealand

Tongariro National Park is a UNESCO Dual World Heritage Site and an enormous alpine adventure land. You can follow established walking paths or join experienced local guides on tours to immerse yourself in the glory of nature. The national park is the perfect base for outdoor activities from trout fishing and skiing to hiking, mountain biking and climbing. When the ski lifts fall silent, the mountains hum to a different tune. In the summer, the chairlift up Mount Ruapehu to Knoll Ridge Chalet takes you to an altitude of 2,020 metres. Sip fine New Zealand wines while admiring the mountains and marvelling at a photographic exhibition of previous volcanic eruptions. You may also want to join a guided walk to Mount Ruapehu’s sparkling crater lake or take the gentler Meads Wall Walk, which helps you explore the region’s links with Peter Jackson’s film version of The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Just pick up a map from the Whakapapa Visitor Centre to discover a world of possibilities.
